Just one person separates Michigan State's first official basketball season from the origin of the game itself. 

 ... In the winter of 1900 (Charles Bemies) took the floor as MAC's first basketball coach, and a year later he authored MSU's first winning season. From the first season through 1907, the team played in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, founded in 1888 and considered the oldest conference in the nation. 

... The team concluded the 1900 season with two resounding victories - 25-8 over Eastern Michigan and 25-7 over Governor's Guard - as a prelude to Bemie's undefeated 1901 season....

... In a time before the fast break, when stall defenses and plodding offensive scheme's were the norm, when some scoreboards were designed to max out at 60 points, a point total above the century mark was totally unheard of... In Denman's second outing as head coach, on the road against Governor's Guard, his team won by a more understated score of 19-0, a mark that made history nonetheless as the only shutout in Michigan State history...
